Historic Patrick Creek LodgeThe original Patrick Creek Lodge was located about four miles up Patrick Creek along the historic Gasquet Toll Road, a route that started in the mining town of Waldo, Oregon (Jefferson State Byway) and went to Patrick Creek over a pass located north of present day Highway 199. At Patrick Creek, the road continued on a toll road to the town of Gasquet. You can see the road high on the mountain above the present day location of the lodge on Highway 199. From Gasquet the road continued down the Smith River and through the redwood forest along the route followed by today's Howland Hill Road to Crescent City, California. The lodge was reconstructed in its present location in 1926 when the Redwood Highway (Highway 199) was completed. The original building was a log structure later covered with an exterior of boards. You can still see an example of the original log structure if you walk around to the left side of the building. There is a very nice barrier free trail that begins in the parking area and goes under Highway 199 to a wheelchair accessible fishing platform where you can get a close look at the river, then continues past historic rock work done by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in the mid 1930's and ends at a mining display and the entrance to the Patrick Creek campground. The entire walkway is paved. The first floor lobby, restrooms and dining room of Patrick Creek Lodge are wheelchair accessible. Over night accommodations are available for those who want to spend the night and the dining accommodations for breakfast, lunch and dinner make this a fun stop for families who want to spend some time to have a meal in the historic surroundings of the lodge and take a short walk on the Patrick Creek trail to see the river and learn about the mining history of the area. The wheelchair accessible Darlingtonia Botanical Trail is about four miles from the lodge and trailheads into the Siskiyou wilderness (Devil's Punchbowl, Youngs Valley, Island Lake) are about 18 miles away. The historic Camp Six lookout located on Bear Basin Butte is about 13 miles from the lodge.
