The total driving distance from Cave Junction to the trailhead is about 23 miles with half of that drive on gravel surfaced roads. The Black Butte Road Guide provides directions to the trailhead and information about things to see along this drive. Some sections of the road are rough and fist-sized rocks that have rolled out on the road from road cuts are common. In many cases you can drive around these rocks but there are places where going over them is unavoidable. High clearance vehicles with tires that are suitable for driving on gravel roads are recommended.

Trail Description

The trail is well marked and has sections that climb for a short distance and descend for a short distance. Views up the canyon of the East Fork of the Illinois River are common making this a very scenic hiking route. Some sections are rocky. Most of the trail passes through an exposure of mantle rock, which generally does not support plant growth. Few trees grow on these rocks so the hike has an alpine "feel" to it.
