Selma, Oregon

Deer Creek Valley, Kerby Peak in distance, Highway 199, Selma, OregonSelma became established in 1897 when the local post office was relocated here. The reason for moving the post office was probably due to the growing number of farms and residents in the Deer Creek Valley. The wife of the postmaster named the new post office in honor of the little town of Selma in Van Buren County, Iowa, near where she was raised. The valley continues to be an agriculture center of the community with grapes grown for wine production at Deer Creek Winery located on Deer Creek Road about four miles from Selma.

 

Wild and Scenic Illinois River

Swinging Bridge, Wild and Scenic Illinois River, Highway 199, Selma, OregonSelma is the gateway to the Wild and Scenic Illinois River corridor. Several trails are located on this road within 12 miles of Selma. Information on trails and history can be obtained from the Wild and Scenic Illinois River Road Guide. The swinging  bridge is located about 12 miles from Selma and is one of the access points to the Kalmiopsis Wilderness seen in the background of the picture.

 

Lake Selmac

Lake Selmac has three campgrounds within a short walk of fishing and bird watching. Two campgrounds are managed by Josephine County Parks and Recreation Department and includes a disc golf course. Other campgrounds around the lake are privately owned.

 

Farmers Market

Locally grown produce and other products are sold at the farmers market, located on Highway 199 about one quarter of a mile north of Illinois River Road. 

 

McMullen House

The historic McMullen House was built by a family with roots back to the first settlers in southwest Oregon and is now owned by the Flying B Bar Ranch that grows and freeze dries roses and other flowers at a garden near McMullen House. A gift shop is set up in the historic house has many of these flowers on display.

 

Camp's Natural Selection Forest

By appointment you can arrange to see Camp's Demonstration Forest, a project that began 50 years ago by a local forester and logger who uses a selective logging techniques to culture old growth quality forest products.

 

Eight Dollar Mountain State Park

This is a new Oregon State Park located near the top of Eight Dollar Mountain and does not have an established access route at this time.

 

Southern Oregon University Siskiyou Field Institute

This is an educational and research facility that offers formal programs on the local ecology and geology.

 

Kerby Peak Trail

The hike is steep and climbs to the site that was used as a lookout station. Brewer's spruce, a tree found only in this region, are located near the peak.
