Oregon 150 Celebration - Illinois Valley
29-30 Aug 2009

This is the second of three events to celebrate Oregon's 150th anniversary and will be located at Jubilee Park in Cave Junction, Oregon.

The day begins at 7:00am with a pancake breakfast featuring homemade blackberry syrup, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy. There will be food vendors, artists, and crafter displays with all participants being from Illinois Valley. Pony rides will be available for kids and Native American dances and stories will be presented throughout the day.

Traditional games and races will be conducted to include the three leg race, watermelon seed spitting contest, and frog jump context (you need to bring a frog for the event). Other community service and nonprofit organizations will also have displays set up. Music will be played by various local musicians.

Kerby's unique businesses will also be open and within walking distance of Rogue Community College extension building. This includes the Kerbyville Museum, three furniture makers, a rock and gem shop, and others.

Get the most out of the day

Crescent City will have a low tide at 7:30am on August 22, which is a good time to take a walk on the beach or visit tidepools. Water will be low enough to start exploring tidepools at 7:00am and if you schedule your tour after 9:00, you will have plenty of time to look around before the tour begins.

The Oregon 150 anniversary will be celebrated in Oregon's Illinois Valley surrounded by wild and scenic rivers, wilderness areas, and home to Oregon Caves National Monument, Great Cats World, and more. The handout on things to do and see around Cave Junction (pdf 300kb) points out 27 things you might want to do as part of your visit to this area. If you decide you would like to visit Oregon Caves for a cave tour, keep in mind that weekend crowds can cause long waits for tours but these crowds typically dwindle after 3:00pm. If you arrive after 3:00pm, you will have less difficulty getting on a tour. The last tour of the day is at 6:00pm.

The Oregon Caves Lodge, one of the Great Lodges of the West, is offering room discounts for tour participants, which include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights (541 592-3400 for reservations - tell them you registered for the tour). If you spend Saturday night at the lodge, keep in mind that the Bigelow Lakes Loop Trail is an ideal early morning hike and is located a short drive from the lodge. This is one of the most scenic loop trails in this region. More information on the Oregon Caves Lodge...
