Walker Road Scenic Drive, California

Walker Road is a gravel surfaced road that takes you through the redwood forest for about half a mile where it forks into two roads that each end at the Smith River. It is a short drive but gets you away from the crowded trails where most Highway 199 travelers stop to see giant redwood trees.

The Leiffer and Elsworth Loop Trails are a short distance down Walker Road on the left. Both offer a less crowded redwood forest hiking experience. Part of the Leiffer Trail was once an early historic road, the 1857 Turnpike and Puncheon Road (known locally as the McGrew Trail), constructed between Crescent City and the gold rush fields of southwest Oregon.
