Kalmiopsis Wilderness

If you want to go to the Kalmiopsis wilderness plan on driving 15-20 miles off of Highway 199 to get to the wilderness boundary. The two primary access points to the Kalmiopsis wilderness is the TJ Howell Botanical Drive or the Wild and Scenic Illinois River Drive. A portion of both these drives is on gravel roads. The Rancheria Creek road to Chetco Pass and Pearsoll Peak requires a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Hiking in the Kalmiopsis wilderness is best in the spring or fall. Snow is common in high elevations during the winter and the summers are typically hot. There is not much vegetation for shade in many parts of the wilderness. The Babyfoot Lake trail and Whetstone Butte trail are both described in the TJ Howell Botanical Drive road guide. (see also the TJ Howell Botanical Drive photo tour)

The Illinois River and Chetco Rivers both go through the wilderness and are among the most inaccessible rivers in the lower 48 states. White water rafting and kayaking on these rivers are best in the spring.

Kalmiopsis is the botanical name for a flowering plant that grows only in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwest Oregon. The Kalmiopsis looks similar to an azalea.
