Oregon Caves Highway Scenic Drive

Oregon Caves Highway (Highway 46) takes you through Illinois Valley to the boundary of Siskiyou National Forest where the road narrows and climbs eight miles of curving mountain road to Oregon Caves National Monument. The road map below is a suggested travel route that adds about three additional miles to the trip to Oregon Caves but takes you past two wineries, a blueberry farm, historic sites, scenic ranch and farm land.

Oregon Caves Highway Road Guide
Oregon Caves Highway (Highway 46) road guide begins at the intersection with Highway 199. Mileage is given at the beginning of each of the following.

0.0   Turn off of Highway 199 on to the Oregon Caves Highway (Highway 46).

0.1   Visitor Center on right. If you have an RV towing a vehicle, it is recommended that you park your rig at the visitor center and drive your towed vehicle to Oregon Caves. Travelers with travel trailers should also consider parking their trailer at the visitor center while they visit Oregon Caves.

1.7   Turn right on Holland Loop Road. Be cautious for sharp turns.

2.9   Fort Briggs: A historic sign at the sharp corner in the road indicates the site of a settlers residence that was used as a fortress during a period of war with local Natives. The house behind it is the sign is not Fort Briggs.

3.3   Bridge over Sucker Creek

3.6   Intersection of Takilma Road. Stay left.

Alta Vista Blue Berry Farm is on this corner. Blue berries are commonly ripe in the early summer.

4.1   Bridgeview Vineyard and Winery:  Well known nationally, this winery has a large trout pond where fish can be seen swimming. Picnic tables and a shady lawn make this a refreshing stop for all.

7.1   Holland Store

Foris Vineyard and Winery:  Directions: Turn right at Holland Store and stay to the right as you pass the store. About half a mile up the paved road turn right and drive another half mile on the road to Foris Vineyard.

9.1   Bridge over Sucker Creek

0.1   Bear Creek Vineyard and Winery:  An affiliate of Bridgeview Winery. The photo at the top of the page is of this vineyard.

0.4   Cave Trail Campground: 

1.7   Country Hills Resort: 541 592-3406:  Camping/motel/cabins. Showers, laundry, etc.

3.8   Little Grayback Creek: 

4.0   Fishing pond:  A fun spot for families who want to see what it feels like to reel in some pan size fish. Prices for fishing and rentals can be found on their website. Ask them about taking your fish to Oregon Caves and having the chef in the historic chateau prepare a meal with your fish as the main course.

5.3   Grayback Barrier Free Wheelchair Trail

5.6   Grayback Road (USFS 4611): This is a gravel surfaced road to Williams and Medford. A Forest Service map is highly recommended if you want to travel this route. See route at Oregon Caves - Williams Back Country Road

5.7   Cedar Camp Loop Trail  Historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp:

12.0 Lake Creek bridge. Panther Creek forms a small water fall partially hidden by fallen trees on the hill above the bridge. Panther Creek originates near the Big Tree, a popular hiking trail at Oregon Caves National Monument.

13.2 USFS 960: The road seen on the left as you enter the Oregon Caves parking lot is the route to take if you want to hike the Bigelow Lakes Loop Trail.
